Arrival
My favorite movie of 2016 was Arrival. Everything about the movie works on so many levels and the movie only becomes better on the re-watch. Here's a video-essay on the film by one of my favorite YouTube channels. WARNING: There are spoilers for the film in there. So if you haven't seen Arrival do not watch this video, watch the movie Arrival cause it's also really really good. Enjoy.

The Future of Film
The year is now 2018 and the ability to create a feature film is as accessible as ever. All you need to be writer is a pen and paper. All you need to be a film maker is a camera and now everyone's pocket can film 1080p video with no issues. The 2015 movie Tangerine had a budget of $100,000, was filmed on an iPhone 5s, and received high critical praise by the majority of the film community. Beyond the ability to create a film, the distribution of film can now be done within the hour for thousands to see. Netflix, Hulu, Vimeo, and many more are creating their own content then putting it out the second its ready. The game has now changed but I don't think this will kill one medium and the other thrives because of it. Many advocate for big screen theater experiences to preserve the art. While the ones on the other side want to see grounded stories that can be seen on the device it was made from. It's an incredible time to want to be a film maker and I am very curious to see what the future of film holds.

2018 Academy Awards
The 2018 Academy Awards are approaching very quickly and this has to be one of the strongest fields I've ever seen. So much variety and talent will be at this years show and I cannot wait for the verdict that the academy will give. Last year's winner, Moonlight, was a very well deserved Best Picture winner. The story, acting, directing were all on point to give one of the most real movies I've ever seen. Another movie that reminded me of that Best Picture winner and could have a shot at the crown is Call Me By Your Name. A beautiful coming of age story that highlights an undeniable connection two people have. While in my opinion this movie is a well deserved winner, there are plenty of "movie politics" that go around and it is unlikely that Call Me By Your Name will win since a similar movie won last year. In my eyes the Best Picture race is between Get Out, Lady Bird, and Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri. Get Out for its political statements, brilliant screenplay, and masterful directing. Lady Bird for the grounded story that everyone can relate to in some aspect. Then Three Billboards for the unique dialogue, unforgettable characters, and coming off of the Golden Globes with the Best Drama win. The Best Picture race is always a fun race to be a part of and on March 4th the final verdict will be given. I cannot wait to see what stars shine brightest that night.
